Last night I wrote briefly about this car I’m bidding on on eBay, a 1964 Plymouth Barracuda with a 273 V8 and a factory 4 speed. Its awesome and I love it, and I want it in my garage. But because I’m nosy, I found out some things.

Kinja'd!!!

About three months ago in the beginning of March, the car sold on eBay from Connecticut for $2900. It would appear the deal fell through (car and property purchases are non-binding and subject to inspection on eBay), because three weeks later it sold again, this time for the princely sum of $1650.

It would appear it actually sold that time and for that amount, because the current seller (in NJ) has positive feedback from the guy who was selling it the prior two times. Not sure why it went for $2900 once, because running/driving ones can be had for closer to the second sale price, but whatever.

Now when the car sold for $1650, the only difference was that the engine/transmission were in the car whereas now they’ve been removed. I’m fine with that, since I’ll have it on an engine stand with the pistons soaking in Marvel Mystery Oil the day it comes home (assuming I win it).

So I’m left to wonder a few things. Why did it sell for so much the first time? Did multiple people turn it down for a figure around $2900 before it sold for $1650? Will other people be as nosy as I am and look at sold examples on eBay to see that this same car (with the same pictures) sold two months ago? And if they do, will they hopefully be turned off by that and allow me to scoop the car for less than $1650?

Anyway, because I’m always planning ahead, I drove past a slightly later (68 or 69) gold Barracuda I’ve been aware of for some time to see if it was still there, which it is. I prefer this body style, so hopefully it stays in my range and my wife doesn’t murder me in my sleep.

I say that, but I know her...she would want me to see her do it.

Could be the original “winner” was just some deadbeat bidder, jacking the price up for no reason... or some nefarious reason... but in the end never paid for the car at the inflated price, hence the re-listing.

Are you sure that this is a legit sale?

Thats my feeling, I’ll have to check the original winner’s feedback. $1650 is more in line with what its actually worth, $2900 is a bit nuts.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure. The guy told me he has a CT bill of sale, title, and past registration...which makes sense given that the car came out of CT. I think the guy who has it now bought it, got into it, and decided to get out of it. People are funny like that. It ends Saturday at like 1pm, which is great because nobody is on eBay at 1pm on Saturday except losers like me.

Was it titled by him? Does he legally own it?

I reverse GIS’d it and the car is in Bayonne, which is not exactly the greatest of areas.

When I sold my running and driving 64 Barracuda in 2012 it went for $3005 but it was rock solid and had a lot of extra old school mopar performance bits on it. (rear leafs, locking diff, brake upgrades, stiffer torsion bars, 360 engine...etc.) but it was a pushbutton auto too.

Yeah, I've heard Bayone sucks. CT title, so the current seller never registered the car...that's most classic project cars though. What I ought to do is get the VIN and make sure it's never been reported stolen. I mean even if there's no paperwork I can get it registered, it's just annoying when people sell cars with somebody else's paperwork.

Sounds badass. I don't think a factory stick should make this one worth what yours was, since it's not rock solid and doesn't run. Sounds like the first sale was an aberration and the second one is closer to its true value.

I like the $5 added in.

I bet the guy had a shill bidder jack it up—and nobody bid.

Not title on pre-67 cars in Ct. And that style plate on the car hasn’t been issued since about 1975.

That follows, the seller in the first auction said he has a title and registration from 1974, which is all I would need to register it in Rhode Island.
